You might love the Plex Smart Manufacturing Platform, but do you know the people who make it possible? Talented Plexians have been working hard behind the scenes for decades. They’re what make this company great, but few get the chance to step into the spotlight they deserve – until now. This month, say hello to Distinguished Engineer Drew Flint.
Tell us about your role at Plex.
I am a high-level engineer in the platform organization. I support the engineering teams that implement new technologies, communicate the costs of running the infrastructure (existing and new), and troubleshoot the most complicated problems when they arise.
What do you love most about your job?
I love learning about new technologies, how to implement them at large scale, and the people I work with.
Your favorite Plex memory is:
When we celebrated our 20th anniversary. I was interviewed by the CEO at that time, and we had the opportunity to talk with one of our very first customers. It was more special because my family was able to attend the celebration and see what their sacrifices helped build.
How will technology make the world smarter in the next 10 years?
Technology will make the world smarter by providing context to the massive quantities of data we’ve been gathering from the billions of smart devices in the world.
Tell us about a major opportunity or challenge in today’s manufacturing industry.
Right now, hiring people to work on the plant floor is a significant challenge many manufacturing companies have. This creates an opportunity for those companies that specialize in technologies that help manufacturers do more with less, like plant floor automation solutions. Over the next several years, I expect to see many automation-centric solutions fulfilling the roles plants are no longer able to hire for.
Where are you located?
Metro Detroit.
What’s your favorite nonprofit or charity?
My current favorite non-profit/charity is Carriage Town Ministries. They provide care to people that need help in Flint, MI. You can find them on the web here: Carriage Town Ministries. They offer a lot to the community. I have to plug their Blueline Donuts, they are exceptionally good.
When you were five, what did you want to be when you grew up?
An astronaut!
Describe your dream vacation:
I love to do day hiking. My ideal vacation would be somewhere with nature trails of all skill levels that I can explore at my own pace. We’ve had some great hiking experiences in Hocking Hills, Ohio, and the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
What are your favorite things to do on the weekend?
I love to read, watch movies, and hang out with close friends and family.
You’re stranded on a desert island and only allowed three books. Which would they be?
The Bible, The Lord of the Rings, and The Lord of Chaos.
If you could spend the day with any celebrity or historical figure, who would it be?
I think I would love to spend some time with John Williams. He’s had a 40-year career composing for major motion picture orchestral soundtracks. He’s created the music for Indiana Jones, Star Wars (all 9 of them), Jurassic Park, and Jaws to name a few. I think he would have some amazing stories to share.
Some musical artists or bands you never get sick of are:
Mutemath
Need to Breathe
Michael Giacchino
John Williams
If you had to live inside one movie for the rest of your life, which would you choose?
This is tough to pick one. It’s a toss-up between Star Wars Episode 6 and maybe The Fellowship of the Ring.
Tell us something most people don’t know about you:
I still love to watch cartoons!
